Minutes of the initiating group meeting 23rd Sept 2009
Forming the initiating group
The initiating group is not "the management" of the transition town, we hope it will act more as an enabling force to find ways in which you can get involved.
Having said that we've started to add a bit more structure so that we each have different areas of responsibility, and others know who to look to on different issues.
As we set up more active groups over the next months we aim to have a 'convener' from each of the these groups represented on the initiating group. There are also some more central activities, such as communication and outreach, that we've also created responsibilities for. So far there are five of us and we hope to add a few additional names in the coming months:
Communication/Website/Networks - Petica Watson
Outreach to other groups/ Heart and Soul - Jane Edwards
Vision Group convener - Careen Hertzog
Food Group convener - Elaine Henderson
Education/Awareness raising convener - George Latham
Areas still to fill:
Transport Group convener
Property/ Energy Group convener
Waste and Recycling Group convener
Youth Transition Group
The initiating group will meet once a month, and we will post on the website the agenda for the meeting beforehand and the minutes afterwards. Meetings will generally be in the week following the monthly film night. Where the convener of a group is unable to attend, we will try to make sure that someone else from the same group goes to the meeting instead.
Communications/Website
We discussed how to use the website at length at the last meeting, and hopefully you will see a significant increase in the content from now on. Our aim is to keep you informed of the activities and new ideas of others and to inspire and facilitate you to take part. The site is very interactive, and should be relatively easy for you to post your own ideas or events on the site.
Film nights
We were thrilled with the success and feedback from the first of our monthly film nights at the Lexi and we're now planning the second for the 14th Oct - showing 'A Farm for the Future'.
We are really keen to make sure that we fill the space again, so tickets are on sale now (£5 from the Lexi). We'll also be selling tickets at 2 other events on Sunday 11th Oct:
1. Following the great success of our apple pressing at Queens Park day we will be running a stall at the farmers market, pressing more of the apples picked through Michael Stuart's inspiring local harvest project, talking to people about Transition and highlighting the film night.
2. In addition we will be helping out at the Lexi's first birthday (Green Sunday) at the same time.
We are likely to need quite a few people to cover both events so will be calling for those interested to come and help nearer the time.
After the film we will again be using the constitution club's bar for the discussion/ speakers. At the moment we are hoping to hold an 'open space' or 'world cafe' discussion (both very transition terms (!) that basically mean a number of simultaneous conversations in smaller groups)
Future Events/ Projects
We aim to have a number of more informal 'meet ups' and social gatherings to enable people to get to know each other and chat about their ideas. We've already posted the picnic amongst the events, and are planning a monthly 'Green Drinks' which will probably take place in Hugo's organic wine bar and restaurant on Lonsdale Road.
We are keen to set up a Transition Handbook Book Club to run over the winter months - of which more soon.
We are exploring with the Lexi and some of our number holding an 'Eco Architects' event jointly with Transition Ealing.
We are keen to start making links and building relationships with other organisations in the area such as Elders Voice, Brent Friends of the Earth, the council, local schools and so on.
