Hi all, Happy New Year!

Do we have any budding volunteers to help look after the allotment this coming season?

I still want to be involved, but would love some help from others if possible in maintaining a regular presence at the allotment.  It would be great if we could agree a rota of people who could commit to say, one two hour slot per month, so that weather permitting, there is reliably someone onsite (say every Saturday at 12-2, or whatever suits the majority).

Here's hoping for a better growing year :)

Hi Miko and everyone!

A rota would be great but every week may be too big an ask, so I'm going to suggest a different model and see what everyone thinks. Please give a response if you have any thoughts...

What I'm thinking of as an alternative is a 'cluster' model with individuals/couples taking on responsibility for a small, designated space within the allotment. I have numbered all the spaces and started to cover with cardboard those that are clear, or more or less clear, won't need to be weeded again prior to planting. At the moment, the following spaces are ready to go:

2,3 and 4 - Each of these is half of one of the rectangular raised bed

7, 8, 9 and 10 - Each of these is one of the 'wedges' into which the large triangle bed is divided

For anyone feeling a bit more ambitious, bed number 5 - the strip bordering the cafe outdoor area - needs clearing and planting

Apart from undertaking to keep our own little sections planted, weeded and watered for the whole season, I suggest we all do our best to meet once a month, e.g. on the last Sunday morning in the month. At that time, we could help each other out, share experiences and maybe work together to get more beds ready for cultivation.

What do people think about this? And would anyone be interested in taking on a small patch?

Unless it pours with rain, I'll be up at the allotment tomorrow morning (Sunday) at around 11 to prune the apple trees, so do feel free to come along and look at the beds and think about what you might like to take on. I'm also happy to give any new food growers advice and provide seeds to people who want to get involved.

This isn't to contradict Miko's suggestion, which would be fine if it's doable. Personally, though, I'm not in a position to commit to a rota and wonder whether the same applies to others, hence my alternative suggestion...

Look forward to your comments and maybe to seeing some of you tomorrow...

Maggie

I would be interested in taking a patch! Caroline - are you meeting this Sunday? Can the patch be sponsored or do we self fund it? I can do both? :)
