SUMMARY:Green Paddington Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The next Green Paddington get together is on Monday 12 Apr
 il, 6pm – 7.30pm at Café Ami, 7 Marylands Road W9 5DU.\n\nBrief not
es on the last one on 1 March:\n\nLow Carbon Zone\nParts of Queens Par
k have been designated as a Low Carbon Zone (LCZ), with funding to sup
port energy efficiency measures. Three key points from discussion:\n\n
 · Funding and measures for energy efficiency are complex, material ne
eds to be produced to help people navigate through the options.\n\n·
As well as ‘techy’ measures there are things such as draught-proof
ing that can be done on a more DIY basis but people need to know where
to get advice or even training (e.g. see Kensal to Kilburn Transition
Town).\n\n· Question: what scope is there to generate an income stre
am for local communities through energy-saving and renewables (photovo
ltaics etc)?\n\nFor more info contact Tim Starley-Grainger, Low Carbon
Zone Project Manager (tgrainger@westminster.gov.uk). Tim also gave co
ntact numbers for Westminster Energy Grants: 020 7641 6161, and WCC Wa
rm and Healthy Homes Advice Line 0800 072 9005.\n\nIdea: something tan
gible and visually striking is needed e.g. huge sculpture of recycle m
aterial. It would be good to engage artists.\n\nComment: beyond tracki
ng and reducing carbon footprint of individuals we want to get a handl
e on the carbon footprint of the neighbourhood. And generating collect
ive and organisational behaviour change as well as individual.\n\nFood
growing\n\nThe constraint in Westminster is finding land. There’s t
he Landshare approach of matching those wanting to grow with people wh
o are happy to have their gardens put to use. However, the Landshare w
ebsite shows far more people locally looking for growing space than of
fering it. Whilst we lack green fields there are creative options from
roof gardens to balconies to skip gardens (23 April to 2 May, Kings C
ross).\n\nAlso noted (a) that many local people grew up overseas in a
rural environment and some retain horticultural skills; and (b) that f
ood growing requires tools, so there is mileage in tool banks – savi
ng on the storage, waste and expense that is otherwise involved.\n\nOt
her points:\n\n· Look into using ‘ning’ to circulate info.\n\n·
Possible event in the summer, and film screenings?\n\n· Wish to conti
nue meeting every month or so, next meeting 12 April.\n\nSome relevant
