Today we picked an unexpected 418kg of apples from the wonderful orchards in Fryent Country Park. About 40 volunteers came to help and although we thought there was less fruit than in previous years they sought it out, picked into bags and boxes and celebrated with a picnic in the sunshine. The fruit was taken to the Sufra foodbank and will be juiced by Urban Cider who make a donation to the group and brought cider for the picnic. A joyous day and thanks to all who took part.

Fruit picking groups in Brent have started harvesting local fruit that would otherwise go to waste in local gardens. Two Transition Town groups (Kensal to Kilburn Fruit Harvesters and Willesden Fruit Harvesters) along with Mapesbury Residents' Association (MapRA) pick fruit which they share with local schools and community groups.

Last year the three groups between them collected over three tonnes of apples, pears, elderflowers, plums, grapes, blackberries, mulberries and medlars. The fruit is given to local schools and charities including the MS Society, the Salvation Army, Mayhew Animal Home, St Mungo's, Brent Food Banks, and church homeless groups, and is made into delicious juice, chutney, jam, jelly, cider and wine.

Kensal to Kilburn Harvesters are gearing up for their showcase stall at Queens Park Day on Sunday 18th September, where they make and sell hundreds of glasses of fresh apple juice using a traditional fruit press.

Janey McAllester from “Kensal to Kilburn Fruit Harvesters” says, ““It's such a great feeling to lead a pick of fruit that would otherwise rot on a lawn and give them to our friends who cook for and run the local food bank - feeding those in need from local trees!

“We'll be juicing local apples and selling chutney made from them at Queen's Park Day, and hope to meeting people who would like to join us picking or have us pick their trees - it's always such a great way of introducing what we do.”

Viv Stein from “Willesden Fruit Harvesters” says, “Picking fruit is great fun for people of all ages, it helps out tree owners with too much fruit, and is much appreciated by local community groups. So far this season we've had a fun day out blackberrying, picked a hundred and fifty kilos of fruit from local gardens, and are making jam from our local bounty.”

Gerry Weston from MapRA says, “There seems to be plenty of fruit this year; we are looking for more people to get involved.”

Local Fruit Harvesters was set up in 2009 by Brent residents Michael Stuart and Viv Stein, and has become part of the borough's two Transition Town groups - Kensal to Kilburn and Willesden, and taken on by MapRA in Mapesbury. The Willesden group pick fruit in Willesden, Dollis Hill and Cricklewood. The award-winning project is part of the national Abundance Network. The fruit gets shared out between garden owners, volunteer pickers and distributed to local schools, charities, restaurants and shops on a non-profit basis. The projects have also trained over seventy people to prune fruit trees.
Hi all

Before this season gets going, here's a round up of last year's successes:

Fruit picking groups in Brent have had a bumper harvest this year, saving over three tonnes of fruit that would otherwise go to waste in local gardens. Two Transition groups (Kensal to Kilburn Fruit Harvesters and Willesden Fruit Harvesters) and Mapesbury Residents' Association (MapRA) have between them picked a record amount of fruit, which has been shared with local schools and community groups.

Around a hundred and fifty volunteers have helped pick this year's crop of apples, pears, elderflowers, plums, grapes, blackberries, mulberries and medlars. The fruit is given to local schools and charities including the MS Society, the Salvation Army, Mayhew Animal Home, St Mungo's, Sufra and Brent Food Banks, and church homeless groups, and has been made into delicious juice, chutney, cordial, jam and wine. The grand total includes a record 625kg from a joint groups' big pick at Fryent Country Park in Kingsbury.

Janey McAllester, who co-ordinates picks for “Kensal to Kilburn Fruit Harvesters” says, “We've had a bumper year: more fruit saved from going to waste, more pickers joining our community spirit and more organisations benefitting from the harvest.”

Vendy Hudcova, who co-ordinates picks for “Willesden Fruit Harvesters” says, “It has been a really good year for apples. We picked from August to October and saved over 800kg of fruit - the most we've ever harvested. We had many new tree owners who were happy to share their fruit, and several new pickers join our group this year. We involved the 4th Brondesbury Girl Guides, and a two year old toddler also joined us on a couple of picks!”

The project has made a big difference to local residents in need. Stephen Chamberlain, Co-ordinator at Saint Laurence’s Larder and Open Kitchen held at Christ Church in Willesden Lane, says, “At Christ Church we provide a three course vegetarian meal for Brent's most marginalised community - the homeless people who live in B&Bs or hostels."

"Thanks to the generous supply from local harvesting groups, we were able offer bagged organic fruit, and to produce and prepare many, many freshly baked apple and pear crumbles to eat at our Tuesday and Thursday drop-in and take-away evening meal services. The windfalls and picked fruit have indeed been a godsend for our guests."

Gerry Weston, who co-ordinates picks for MapRA, says, “We had fewer people and picks this year, but still harvested 98kg of fruit which was donated to Ashford Place and Malorees school. We are looking for more people to get involved next year.”

Local Fruit Harvesters was set up in 2009 by Brent residents Michael Stuart and Viv Stein, and has become part of the borough's two Transition Town groups - Kensal to Kilburn and Willesden, and taken on by MapRA in Mapesbury. Also a Japanese girl turned up early for the museum and joined in too - she lives in Hampstead and is going to email us and join the group - it was funny to have the Japanese girl join us as we were suddenly a half-Japanese group and I temporarily learnt the word for 'more!' when they enthusiastically called for more shaking :-)

I had such a lovely time harvesting the plums. I helped harvest the plum tree outside Kilburn Police Station last week and had a great time. Made jam from most of my plums which I hope will be sold on Queens Park Day. Maybe Tania told you that several passers by joined in - including two police officers!! Can't believe that the tree is outside our old house. We lived at 1 Dudley Rd. for l6 years. I remember it well. It was quite small when we lived there. Then Leo Johnson, passing, also gave a hand. Rebecca mentioned an apricot in Ledbury Road. Passers by who helped took plums as did a woman who lived opposite. Leo took a load to make plum brandy, possibly, Rebecca and Jean are jam making."
Fryent Park Big Pick in the Newstag:ttkensaltokilburn.ning.com,2014-09-13:3499303:Topic:726592014-09-13T11:23:20.487ZSophia Fluckerhttps://ttkensaltokilburn.ning.com/profile/SophiaFlucker

We also made it into the local papers and the Brent Magazine.

It was good to meet people at the recent social. Sheila, one of the distributors, who makes jam in aid of the MS society in Brent said she received so much fruit this year she raised £300 for the charity.

Why not get involved next year and help us pick even more? It will be the group's 5th year, so plenty to celebrate!

Season's greetings,
