Vik Munis is a Brazilian eco-artist with a passion for trash. In this enriching and uplifting documentary, we follow Vik as he travels from his adopted home in Brooklyn, New York, to poverty-stricken Rio de Janeiro, where we land in Jardim Gramacho, the world’s largest landfill site. Here we meet the ‘catadores’, diligent recycling enthusiasts who sift through the waste salvaging whatever reusable materials they can find. Director Lucy Walker’s Oscar-nominated film takes a dramatic shift after Vik encourages the men and women to collaborate on an inspiring art project – creating self-portraits out of the waste they comb through each and every day. Unexpectedly humbling, WASTE LAND is a welcome breath of fresh air in the crowded eco-doc subgenre. A Lexi fave!
