Divest Brent is a campaign to work with Brent Council to divest (i.e. dispose of) fossil fuel investments from their Pension Fund. With around a dozen other borough Divest groups, in London alone, we are part of a global Fossil Free movement calling on local authority pension funds, universities and colleges, and other large institutional investors to divest from fossil fuels. Not only does this put pressure on fossil fuel companies by making it harder to raise investment funds and by withdrawing their social licence to extract and market climate-wrecking fuels, but it is also sound financial sense. Many mainstream organisations, including the Bank of England, have warned of the “carbon bubble” – the fact that the large oil companies’ values are based on massive reserves which cannot be burned without leading to runaway climate change. Any investor holding shares in such companies will, sooner or later, suffer from a “correction” leading to a drastic fall in the value of those shares.
