We - David, Jen, Wystan, Sanchia, Maureen and Michael - added two raised beds filled with a mix of soil and manure to the Fiveways allotment on Winchester Avenue on Saturday. Both are in view of passersby and the road. Residents asked for and applied to Brent Housing Partnership for a grant to build them after enjoying growing food with Transition Town last year and wanting to do more of the same.

During a break we tapped a birch tree for sap, something that's only possible for a few weeks at this time of year as the sap rises. We got about two cup fulls and shared it out over lunch (which included allotment pak choi). Some people thought it tasted like water, others detected a bitter taste, even though its supposed to be about 1% sugar.

There'll soon be another day to build one more raised bed in the inner area for potatoes and we'll also be planting out with residents.
