The result is that our organic meat boxes have a lower carbon footprint than meat of veg from any other farm, even organic farm. I believe we are the very first such farm in the country and the first to use carbon neutral transport to deliver the boxes to you door!

Organic beef & lamb boxes delivered to London addresses once per month (last Wednesday of each month) by carbon neutral transport. Native grass-fed rare breeds: Red Ruby cattle, Wiltshire Horn sheep, carbon neutral farm, where all energy comes from renewable sources.  Quite a few people find it convenient to share a box. And btw, our prices are lower than supermarkets' prices for ordinary meat.

We are also contacting other organic farmers in our locality with a view to extend the range on offer.

 

That falls within the new Transition Twinning concept of partnerships between rural and urban Transition Groups for food supply, home swaps for holidays, working holidays on farms, ideas and enthusiasm sharing, etc, etc. We hope this will develop into a realistic, low cost, zero carbon food conveyor from rural to urban areas, as well as many other forms of co-operation. Recently I have presented our journey from non-farmers to one of the first organic carbon-neutral beef & lamb farms at The Royal Agricultural College and also at the last Transition Movement's International conference. Can I ask the webmaster to place this on your excellent website and include it in your next Newsletter or email it to your members to allow your group to consider these proposals, which were developed in response to a discussion about food and the urban/rural split at the last Transition Conference. Perhaps you could place the Big Barn link on your directory as well.

You will be aware that a) organically reared, grass fed cattle produce 60% less methane than grain fed cattle, b) we use exclusively carbon neutral transport: home made bio-diesel from waste oil, c) cattle and sheep eat grass, which we cannot and some areas are only suitable for growing grass, not cereals or vegetables.

Hi George,

I also used to live in and near London, but back in 2005 I learned about Peak Oil (well before Transition itself existed) and reacted by quiting my job, selling up and buying a small farm in Cornwall. Since then we have converted to organic, switched almost completely to renewables and are producing carbon neutral food (i.e. meat boxes) for our local market.

Traditionally, Transition Groups tend to impose geographical limits on the distance from their sources of food, and that, in the world of fossil fuels and just in time deliveries (=frequent deliveries) is very understandable.

However, if the food itself is produced in an organic and carbon neutral way, is delivered in a carbon neutral way and just once every month, it becomes perfectly acceptable, especially if you consider that London in particular will always need to import vast majority of its food from elsewhere, whereas Cornwall has now and probably will always have an excess of farm produce, which has to be 'exported' somewhere. This way we ensure that such 'export' is green and clean, rather than leaving to the wholesalers and supermarkets ...

So we have started a new venture: Fieldpower Organics (find us on www.BigBarn.co.uk), which is starting to deliver organic and carbon neutral meat boxes from our farm, Cottage Farm, to London by carbon neutral transport.

Our whole farm works on renewables with almost no use of fossil fuels. So both the produce and the delivery is carbon neutral. One of the first carbon-neutral organic farms in the country.

We are also contacting other local organic farmers with a view to extend our monthly deliveries to extend the range of available produce to include pork, poultry, eggs and other produce. We may also include vegetables at some point, but have not done so yet.
