Event Description

Our first bookclub meeting takes place on 22nd Feb at the Kilburn library on Salusbury Road.
At this first meeting we will be focusing on the first two chapters of the Transition Handbook.
Chapter 1 - peak oil and climate change, the two great oversights of our times
Chapter 2 - the view from the mountain-top - ways forward, why energy descent?
All are welcome to come along - we hope this will be a very informal and accessible way to discuss and learn about the Transition concept in a friendly and open setting.
The book is available on Amazon or direct from the Transition Network, or it is available to download online - see the link on the handbook group page.

So Paul, does this mean you're beginning to see that whilst Climate Change means we must reduce our use of oil and other fossil fuels, Peak Oil makes it inevitable?

Ah yes. As David MacKay says at withouthotair.com: "Naughty China, making all those things -- for US!" :p

I'm no economist so am probably not even qualified to respond properly to this.

It seems from their statement that the reducing demand for oil in OECD countries is most likely a temporary effect of the recession. Even assuming it isn't, surely much of our own economic "growth" (must learn what that term really means) depends upon non-OECD countries having access to cheap oil to allow them to manufacture the products, food, etc which we in turn consume.

I need to learn economics...

About the seventh paragraph of http://peakoiltaskforce.net/download-the-report/2010-peak-oil-report/. It also appears in the report itself.

Which page is that comment on Paul? I can't see it on any web pages related to the report.

I can't remember the name of the man who mentioned the report "The Oil Crunch", but thanks very much for the tip, it makes for interesting reading. One thing I note on the report's web page is that it says: "The Taskforce recognises that oil demand in the OECD area (developed countries) is now flat or declining"!!!

This came as rather a shock as this is NOT what rob hoskins would have us believe surely? Yes, total global demand IS rising, but not from the rich economies. So surely this, if true, undermines the whole deal about 'we must have growth to sustain our western capitalist lifestyles' as it shows we are indeed currently having economic growth WITHOUT growing oil consumption?

You know its available online legally and for free here right? There's also a reference copy upstairs in Swiss Cottage Library :)

Many thanks for the invite. I'd love to attend and learn more about the Transition Concept. I do have a busy week of photo shoots for my Water Works project which might put a damp squid on me being sociable. If I can't make it, I look forward to taking part in future events.
