Just got an allotment. Can anyone point me to a useful online allotment diary/blog for beginners? Advice on what to do when. Preparation advice and guidance around planting?

Hi Janis

This site is helpful:

Happy gardening

Michael

Thanks Michael. Very useful indeed. Got me thinking about planting as well as digging!!!!
Do you know where I could shop for seeds etc that are good, reliable quality but value for money? Either on line or in Kilburn/Brent area?
I don't know of any local garden centre that is not HUGELY expensive.

Hi Janis,

See this website: http://www.allotment-garden.org/ Useful info for growing, but also for preserving etc. Has forums where you can ask questions, share expertise etc. I like it.

Regarding seeds - Have you tried ordering seeds online? See this article - I found it useful recently and the websites all seem to know what they're talking about and some have an advice section.

Janis, if you're in need of a practice allotment, the plot behind the cafe is in need of some TLC.
I am sure I could learn from the QP allotment and those that care for it. Shame that the nearest allotment to us in Brent was near the old wembley town hall ! Doing a lot of digging at moment, but it never seems to be enough. There is still half to dig and our space is tiny.

Good luck with your allotment, Janis. I have one up at Preston Road, not far from Wembley Park. I'm a busy person and doing mine on my own and have found it invaluable to cover any areas not currently being cultivated. I use cardboard, which is around on the street awaiting collection and therefore free. With crops where you plant out single plants, e.g. courgettes, you can make a hole the cardboard and plant through it. No weeding all summer. Yippee! Maggie
