Brent Energy Coop Workshop at Queens Park

May 15, 2015 from 9:30am to 3:30pm
A one day workshop (9.30 - 15.30) led by Damian Tow of Brighton Energy Coop on the specifics of forming a Community Benefit Society, issuing a Community Share Offer, choosing sites for solar PV, etc, etc.  This is really FYI only, except we have one place (out of 6) remaining for anyone who is really interested. Apologies for the short notice.See More

Solar PV on schools.

There is now a group set up to help schools install solar PV arrays on local schools.  This is  in response to national FOE's campaign "Run on Sun", so we are collaborating with Brent FOE on this.  So far we have identified Salusbury road and Malorees junior schools, also QPCS as having suitable roof space and orientation; we also have many points of contact with these schools.  As local councils have very little money to spare for such projects, we are looking at charitable donations (as are…See More

Run-on-Sun group at Nick's place

September 5, 2014 from 7:30pm to 9:30pm
We are working to get local schools to install solar PV as part of FOE's campaign, so we are associated with the Brent FOE group on this.   So far we have chosen Salusbury and Malorees junior schools and QPCS as suitable, because we have contacts there.  The main issues are not so much technical as how to raise the money in these austere times. Two likely models are charitable fund raising, or a community share offer.  If you would like to be involved, please come to the next meeting. See More

Home energy economy at 20 Hopefield Avenue

October 20, 2013 from 3pm to 5pm
Update on progress since 2010 in reducing this house's carbon footprint.  Solar panels, PV and thermal, a woodburning stove, 'decentralised' heating mean that we are a net exporter of electricity and gas consumption falls within the Passivhaus allowance.   I'll aim to show and talk about these things, and my continuing energy descent plan.  If time,  I'd like to share with you 7 year's experience of electric cars (both positive & negative!).  For practical reasons, will have to limit…See More

I live in Hopefield Avenue with my family and have been attempting to reduce our domestic carbon footprint as much as possible over the years. This includes the obvious things like loft insulation, draught-proofing, secondary double-glazing (with heat reflecting glass), efficient condensing boiler, low energy light bulbs throughout and less obvious things like individual programmers on radiators so as not to heat rooms when noone's there, and a clean-burning wood stove. This year, hopefully, having been granted planning permission, I'll be installing a solar water heater of 3.3 square meters promising around 4000 units of hot water per annum. Other, only partly successful, projects so far have been rainwater collection and use for washing, and greywater recycling for flushing toilets.
Transport-wise, we joined the Streetcar club 4 years ago and also acquired a G-wiz electric car which gets us around London once or twice a week. Getting used to the limited range (40 miles) and remembering to charge the batteries takes a change of mindset, but you get used to it!
I'd be happy to discuss with or show any of you Transition folk these projects.

Energy Coop Blues

Posted on February 11, 2016 at 13:01 0 Comments

Following on from my last post (hopefully not the Last Post!), finally met with the decision makers at Preston Manor School, Wembley: Head, Chair of Governors, Business and Site managers. I presented our offer (Saving on electricity of around £2700 a year, no cost to school, 5% to investors) and got some awkward questions in return.  What if a child were to climb on the solar roof and get injured? What if a hurricane were to blow a panel off and damage people or property? (answer: our…

Brent Energy Coop

Posted on January 21, 2016 at 12:46 0 Comments

Just wanted to let you all know that there is an Energy Coop functioning in Brent!

A group of us from TTKTK and Brent FOE started meeting about 18 months ago responding to FOE's campaign to get local schools to 'Run on Sun'.  (i.e install Solar PV panels) We looked at the various ways of raising funds, ranging from local council money (no chance with the cut-backs) through donations (as e.g. organised by 10:10) to forming a Coop, which we have done. I attended a meeting…

I thought it might appeal to your inner engineer :). I of course would love you to do it as I could find out if it is practicable at no risk to myself :D. If you decide to give it a go let me know as I'd be more than happy to help out with the project. Unfortunately my brother the RAC man lives in Croydon not locally :(.

I now have an OWL borrowed from Queens Park Library (the Westminster one on Harrow Road) for three weeks, though they said that they would not hassle me to get it back, which sounded a litle strange.
We shall see how I get on with it.

Thank you very much for your energy and water saving event.

It was incredibly useful and I hope to be able to borrow a similar electric meter about which I would not have known without the meeting.

Thanks for your message Nick... Sounds great to do a session on all the lifestyle changes/choices that you have made. Do you think that it would be best to do it as an open day/evening at your house so that you can show people round? Or else we could get you to do a talk at another transition event -such as one of the film nights, or we are hoping to have a local architect do a presentation on urban sustainable design soon? Maybe best to do it at your house if you are happy to have people round and then you would be able to show people as well as tell... then we need to think about whether to do it as a daytime event on a weekend or a weekday evening event... do call me to discuss anytime on 07957655750. Also we can think about whether to promote just to KtoK or to a wider transition London audience... Regards George
